Winner Winner Chicken Dinner!

Last night was surreal. 400 people packed into a little piece of elegance in a warehouse in DUMBO. A cellist plucking maudlin stings as a series of presenters, photographs and winners flashed before the crowd. And then Martin Parr announcing the nominees for the Photography Book award.

"And the winner is...Amy Stein."

Strange and wonderful things happening at the New York Photo Festival.

Critical Mass Results Announced

© Lori Nix 1999
The results are in for Photolucida's Critical Mass Book Award and I am one of the five finalists for the softbound monograph prize. Two of the five finalists will be selected and Photolucida will publish monographs of their work. I believe the plan is to put us in a steel cage with rusty spoons and the last two standing get the prize. I'm scrappy and focused, so look out, suckers!

The big hardbound monograph prize went to Camille Seaman and her stunning series, The Last Iceberg. Joining me on the list of five finalists are Benjamin Fink, Heather McClintock, Lori Nix, and Donald Weber.

Wish me luck.

PHotoEspaña 2007

phe07
Just received notice that I was selected as a finalist for the Desubrimientos Award at PHotoEspaña 2007. The review will be held at the Museo Municipal de Arte Contemporáneo in Madrid, June 1 - 3. This is outstanding news for many reasons not the least of which is I was looking for any excuse go back to Madrid and drink copious amounts of Rioja in the shadow of García Lorca.

Also making the cut is good friend and fellow JMU alumn, Susana Raab, and Chicagrapher, Nathan Baker.

Selected for the Saatchi/Gaurdian Show in London

Greetings from London!

First there were 14,000 artists. Then 300. Then 30.

And now the final 10 have been announced for the Saatchi/Guardian "Your Gallery" competition and yours truly was fortunate enough to get enough votes and be a part of the big show in London.

If you voted for me, thank you. If you are in London, please stop by and see the show.

Domesticated Work Selected for Saatchi Gallery/Guardian Competition

Saatchi Gallery and The Guardian newspaper have teamed up for an art contest called Your Gallery @ The Guardian.

The judges are artists Marc Quinn and Cornelia Parker; Mollie
Dent-Brocklehurst, co-director of the Gagosian gallery in London; arts
broadcaster and White Cube gallery director Tim Marlow; and Guardian
art critic Jonathan Jones. They chose 30 artists from over 10,000 registered artists on the Your Gallery site and I was fortunate enough to make that shortlist. Also making the cut is the extremely talented Chicago-based photographer, Brian Ulrich.

Visitors to the Guardian site can now vote for their favorite three artists from the list of 30 and the top ten will be awarded a show in London in late October. May I suggest the following voting strategy: 1. Amy Stein, 2. Brian Ulrich, 3. Amy Stein. Vote Now!
