Critical Mass Registration is Now Open

If you apply to just one juried competition this year, you are pretty stupid. (You should apply to at least three.) But, if you do apply to just one, make sure it's Photolucida's Critical Mass. I can't begin to tell you how many gallery directors, curators, and editors told me they saw my photography first through Critical Mass. I mean, just take a look at the list of 2007 reviewers and try to tell me these aren't the people you want looking at your work.

Registration for the Critical Mass 2007 juried competition is now open and runs through October 26. You can register online here. Do it. Andelay!

Greetings from New York City...Sigh

It's strange how one day you find yourself at the apex of mental and spiritual satisfaction stretching out in the vast unspoiled beauty of Mendocino County and the next day your joy is stripped clean to the bone as you fight with your fellow New Yorkers for an extra inch of space on the AirTrain from JFK. New York is all about compression and I realize now more than ever that my future may involve a move to a place where expansion is not only possible, it’s the norm.

Speaking of just such a place, my brief time in Portland was fantastic. I met with the very lovely Laura Moya and the board of Photolucida in the stunning new Blue Sky Gallery space to discuss my Domesticated project and the upcoming Critical Mass monograph of the series. They couldn't be more supportive of my work or more enthusiastic about the book. The folks at Photolucida and Blue Sky Gallery share a commitment to emerging photographers and the broader photography community that is truly inspired. I have some additional good news from that meeting, but will fill you in on the details once everything is formal and finalized.

Hola from Madrid

We just got to Madrid yesterday morning and hit the ground running with photo openings and delicious wines and cheeses. Most of the time when travel I suffer from serious jetlag that throws me off for most of the trip. This time I decided to take some Ambien to get my clock right, right off the bat. Voila! It´s like my husband says, America is great at two things these days: making bombs to blow things up and making pills to slow things down.

By the way, just got word that I was selected for the Critical Mass book prize and will have a monograph of my Domesticated work published some time in the next year or so. So awesome!

Alright. Off to my first Photo España review.

Critical Mass Results Announced

The results are in for Photolucida's Critical Mass Book Award and I am one of the five finalists for the softbound monograph prize. Two of the five finalists will be selected and Photolucida will publish monographs of their work. I believe the plan is to put us in a steel cage with rusty spoons and the last two standing get the prize. I'm scrappy and focused, so look out, suckers!

The big hardbound monograph prize went to Camille Seaman and her stunning series, The Last Iceberg. Joining me on the list of five finalists are Benjamin Fink, Heather McClintock, Lori Nix, and Donald Weber.
